Who We Are
The Digital Sustainability Hub is a research centre studying how sustainable the digital itself is, rather than how far it can make everything else sustainable.
Why we exist
Sustainability is a decision. It is not a property of things and it is not a virtue: someone, at some point, chooses, and choosing requires knowing what the choice involves.
In the digital that is harder, for one specific reason: the action carries no signal. Opening a very light page and a very heavy one is the same gesture, with the same face, and nothing tells you they differ.
Digital is not immaterial. It is invisible. And what cannot be seen cannot be decided upon.
What we do
Three lines of work, each producing a different kind of awareness. None presupposes the others.
Measuring how far perception diverges. We bring executives and managers to compare what they believe about digital systems with what the evidence shows, and we measure both the distance and the shift that follows. It is the one thing the centre measures on people rather than on phenomena.
Reading what the digital does. Digital technologies do not add themselves to the world, they reconfigure it: they redistribute who does what, with which information, and under whose control. The effects are never the same for everyone involved, which is why asking for whom is not a refinement of the analysis. It is the analysis.
Making the weight tangible. We restate numbers nobody can feel in quantities anyone knows, declaring sources and scope, and showing disagreement between estimates rather than hiding it. This works in both directions: we publish the cases where the figure turns out far smaller than expected.
We do not deliver decisions. We deliver what an informed decision requires.
Our Framework
The framework works on concrete uses rather than on technologies in the abstract. It describes how each use reconfigures the way something is carried out, and maps the resulting effects for every actor involved, in both directions.
It produces no verdict. It produces a picture in which the same use sits in different positions depending on who is looking, which is precisely why a technology cannot be judged on its own.
The framework is described in full on its own page.
Join DSH
The centre is opening to companies and to technology providers, for different reasons.
Companies come to find out what digital systems are doing to them, across all three dimensions, without having to rely on those who sell them.
Technology providers come to understand what their own product does to the people who use it, and because digital sustainability is becoming a subject in the market that few know how to address without slipping into greenwashing.
The centre certifies no one and validates no product. Neutrality is what makes the room worth entering, and the university guarantees it.
We are currently defining the structure and the instruments. Organisations joining at this stage take part in shaping them rather than receiving them finished.
Partners and Network
Anchored at IULM University, the Hub collaborates with companies, institutions and technology providers across Europe and beyond, connecting academic insight with industry practice.
Part of this work runs through Hu-DSH, the research infrastructure for technology transfer funded by Regione Lombardia, through which methods and tools reach organisations.
